Water & Power Plant

I found these pics and thought they might interest some of you.  The first set is over at the power plant and the second is at the water treatment plant.

Power Plant

Looks like backup batteries.  It can't be backup for the town. I think it's probably battery power for the lights and electronic systems in case there is an outage...
These generators are beasts. You've gotta wear 2 layers of hearing protection to go in and the whole place vibrates from those suckers...

Looks like heat exchangers...

Lots of meters and buttons to push...

Water Treatment Plant

Apparently they desalinate 50,000 gallons of sea water a day for town use.  Tastes delicioussss

I don't know much about any of this stuff. I'm pretty sure the white tubes are part of the desalination system...
These are all carbon dioxide cylinders.  Since they're all painted red and connected into a big manifold my guess is that it's part of the fire suppression system.  The water treatment plant is pretty important since we only have one.  I can't imagine how bad things would get if that place burned down.  We'd probably be melting snow for drinking water, while we waited for the weather to clear enough to evacuate, assuming that could even be done at all. Lets just hope those little red bottles do their job if God forbid they're ever needed!

This looks like it might be where they do tests on the water to make sure it's clean and all that...

Happy Memorial Day!

We just had a Memorial Day ceremony here a little bit ago.  It was cold and windy as balls outside, but totally worth it.  30 or so people gathered around, we started with the Pledge of Allegiance. Then the station manager and another guy said a few words. I'm really not sure what was said because it was pretty windy and I couldn't hear through the wind.  Then when it was all over my boss played taps on a trumpet. Then everyone went to the galley for a special cake that was made.

So Happy Memorial Day to everyone!  Don't forget to stop just for a minute and think about those who never got a chance to come home, but made it possible for the rest of us to celebrate them today.

Everyone gathered...

Random Shiz!

Hey everyone, it's been a while so I thought I'd say hi.  I wish I had more to tell you all so that I could post more often. It's just that it's pretty boring at this point. Actually there were 2 days this weekend when my alarm clock went off and I thought, "ahhh, groundhog day again". Our special "mid-winter" dinner is on the weekend of the 16th & 17th. It's apparently a pretty big deal around here. So I'm sure I'll have some pics for you from that.  I've taken a few pics here and there that I thought were funny or interesting so I'll post those babies.  I also found a bunch of pics of various stuff on our common drive so I'll post some of those in a couple other posts since I've been a total post slacker.

I had to go over to medical a week or so ago and this coat was hanging up. I don't know who it belongs to, well other than the obvious, Mr. Cakehole's wife...

 Snow does weird stuff sometimes...
That is a big ass rod & piston dude...
 I didn't need to use all 6 kans. I just took 1...
It was all cold and blowy outside and I had to go somewhere. All suited up...
There was a wine tasting last weekend. I found these mason jar wine glasses in the bathroom. Hilarioussss...
I work in that building. Thats a big ol' pile of snow. Unfortunately it doesn't look as big in the pic as it did in real life. Oh well...
I went over to the NOC(Network Operations Center) the other day. This little USB controlled nerf gun is positioned to guard the door.  It's not plugged in but it's still standing guard! Hahaha...
I took this a couple days ago on my way home from the gym. This is as "light" as it's been getting for a while now. We won't even see that anymore soon. I think it's June 2 when we'll have like 6.5minutes of "light" and then the 3rd is the first day with zero light. So it still isn't "officially" dark yet, but it's been pretty much dark for weeks...
Someone else took the next 4 pics. I found them on our "public drive"...

tomato heaven

I just ate a tomato!  We have a greenhouse and it put out!  We get the occasional cucumber and greens now and then, and my first tomato tonight!  It was funny, they had a guy down in the galley with a list of everyone and when you took your tomato he marked your name off the list. :)

Look at my sweetheart, she's waiting for our moment together...

First we begin by removing her top...
Then slicing her carefully into 8 approximately equal pieces...
Then a light dusting of Morton's finest on one half, au naturale on the other half...
 Time to feast...
It's amazing how quickly one small tomato goes...
I'll miss you...

hurricane son!

It got pretty windy yesterday.  It was blowing pretty decent all day. It must have been about 60 or 70 at one point while I was out doing some work and almost got blown over a couple times.  I heard someone say they did get blown over, oops. :) Then in the evening is started really blowing hard.  The maximum sustained wind speed was 119mph. That's a category 3 hurricane! The maximum gust was 124mph.  I went outside and it must have been maybe 60mph or so and made a video. It was actually pretty weak in the video.  I think most of the loose snow must have been blown away earlier in the day or something, because all day long it was like a wall of snow but you can't hardly see any in the video.  Oh well. I'm sure I'll get better video another time, that won't be the only crazy weather we'll have.

Hahaha, it's actually a Kiwi Rugby team but it's still funny...
That's the gerbil gym. I went over in the morning and none of that snow was on the side of the building.  The wind decided to paint the building though...
Mr moon, it's freakin noon dude, what are you doing up...
Hopefully I can get more exciting video next time we have a storm...

Sunset and stuff

I took some pics of the gyms that I'm using to get swole!  The final sunset was a week or so ago.  The sun went below the horizon for the last time but it still get's "dusky" in the afternoon.  It'll get less and less dusky each day for the next couple weeks until it's finally 100% dark.  I also found a video montage from last winter. The pics are nice, but remember, I didn't pick the music. :)
